10 am Hanamatsuri Service and Shotsuki Monthly Memorial with Rev. Candice Shibata; Perpetual Drawing #1
April 1, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Buddha Day celebrates the birth of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha. Although it is called Hanamatsuri (flower festival) in Japanese, the more proper name is Kanbutsu-e (bathe-Buddha-gathering), in reference to the ritual of pouring sweet tea over a statue of the baby Buddha. The pouring of tea represents the gentle rain, perfumed by flower petals, that is said to have fallen in Lumbini Garden when the Buddha was born. Hanamatsuri is a visually memorable occasion because of the beautifully decorated flower-pavilion (hanamido) used to shelter the baby Buddha statue, which will be placed below our altar in the temple.
Rev. Candice Shibata of Buddhist Church of Florin will deliver the dharma message.
Service will be followed by otoki luncheon and Perpetual Quarterly Drawing #1.
